Baby Basics. Moses basket liner.

Here is a tutorial for making the moses basket liners. I failed to find a free universal one on the Internet. I think this is because all moses baskets are slightly different. I’ve included the average measurements from 7 baskets so that if you want to try to make one without a basket you can have a go. This is a simple pattern using 3 pieces of fabric and 8 pieces of trim or ribbon.
The ribbons make it easy to adjust the liner to fit.

Measure the widest circumference of the basket. ( it’s the top edge) average 218cmimage

Measure the highest part of the basket( usually at the head end) average 27cmimage

Cut 1strip of fabric using these measurements. Cut another strip using the sane length measurement but only half the height measurementimage

Hem or overlock long side of the thick strip.image

Hem or overlock both long sides of the thin strip.image

Sew right sides together on both strips to make 2 loops.image

Place the basket on fabric and cut out an oval the same size as the base. Average size for oval base is 29cm width and 74 cm length.image

Turn the basket over and place the oval wrong side facing up on top.image

Pull the thick loop over the outside of the basket wrong side facing out. With the un hemmed edge at the top.image

Pin both straight sides.image

Gather or pleat the rounded ends.image

Once pinned sew or overlock all the way round.image

Turn the basket over and place the liner wrong side facing up inside.image

Pull the thin loop of fabric over the outside of the basket wrong side facing out.image

Pin both round ends leaving the gap between the handles open. I use 2pins to mark where the handles start to stop me sewing past. Average width of gap 20cm in middle of both sides.image

Sew both ends and put back on basket the right side facing out.image

Cut 8 pieces of ribbon about 30cm in length.image

Pin and sew 2 pieces between each handle this is to tie the 2 layers together.image

Pin and sew each of the remaining 4 ribbons where there would be a corner of the basket if the basket was rectangular. These make the liner adjustable to fit.image

Tie the bows. Finished.image

  1. Hi there! Thanks for the tutorial! I plan on making this and am just wondering if you remember about how much fabric you used? Would 1 yard be enough? Thanks so much! – Carissa

    • Hi thanks for looking at the tutoral. it would totally depend on how big your basket it is. I made 5 last week and they ranged from 228 cm to 211 cm around. So as an example if your basket measured 220cm around and 28cm in depth you would need 220cm x 28cm
Plus 220cm x15cm for the 2nd thinner strip that goes on the outside. These don’t have to be in a continuous strip I often use 2 strips for each… but obviously the less cutting and sewing together the easier it is☺the piece that goes under the mattress doesn’t have to match as you won’t see it once the mattress is in. Does that help? Of not please ask more. Bek

  2. Hi thank you for this fab tutorial. I’m about to have a go and just wondered do I need to add to seam allowance?

    • Hi. Thanks for commenting.I’ve included the measurements for an average basket. If you are making one to fit a specific basket for yourself or as a gift then measure and add seam allowance. If you are making a spare cover to donate to baby basics add seam allowance as I know from fitting covers bigger is better.
